Music at Dudley Middle School - Frequently Asked Questions

What are my choices for Music at Dudley Middle School?

Every student at Dudley Middle School needs to take one music class each year.  The choices are Band - Chorus - or General Music

What is Band?

Band is a class during the Unified Arts Block where students get to learn to play an instrument and perform at 2 concerts throughout the school year.

What is General Music?

General Music is a class during the day that students get to learn and appreciate different styles of music.

So we have decided to sign up for band.  Now what?

Here is a list of information that parents generally ask or that I find to be important for you as you make this important decision.

OK-  I am joining band - Now What?!

What About Guitar and Piano?

Sorry, guitar and piano (keyboard) are not taught in band.

I cannot play an instrument, can I still join band?

Yes!  5th Grade is a beginning band where students learn how to play their instruments.

What instrument should I play?

There are a series of video's to the left of this page that may help you decide which instrument you would like to try to play.  Keep in mind that space is limited on percussion.  Most of the time you will get your first choice with the other instruments.  If you are still unsure what instrument you would like to play just write that on your form and Mrs. Snow will contact you to discuss your options.

When and how do I get my instrument?

Rental Night is September 4th at 6:00 pm - in the DMS Cafeteria.  The Music Company comes to the school and brings the instruments for you to pick up.  This same music company visits DMS every week to pick up the instruments that need repair.

What does it cost to join band?

The cost varies depending on what instrument you decide.  My recommendation is that you rent your instrument.  When you rent the music company will fix problems that happen with the instrument at no charge. The cost of renting changes each school year but here is a ball park cost for each instrument:

You can contact the music company we deal with directly to ask about rental costs.  However, at the beginning of the school year you will receive a detailed letter with specific prices.

Here is a ball park price that you would spend the first year per instrument:

Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion =

10 months = 3 payments (4 months, 3 months, 3 months)

1st payment approx 48.00

2nd payment approx. 48.00

3rd payment approx. 48.00

Alto Saxophone =

10 months = 3 payments (4 months, 3 months, 3 months)

1st payment approx 87.00

2nd payment approx. 87.00

3rd payment approx. 87.00

Baritone, French Horn =

10 months = 3 payments (4 months, 3 months, 3 months)

1st payment approx. 137.00

2nd payment approx. 137.00

3rd payment approx. 137.00

A word of caution about instruments purchased from online stores, large retail chains, and warehouse stores:  Many of these instruments don't conform to any industry standards.  They may look nice, but can actually be detrimental  to your child's progress.  They tend to be more difficult to repair and in some cases, impossible.  When you rent most music companies have a repair agreement in the contract and offer loaner to the student while the instrument is being fixed.
